This summer is one of the hottest on record! No, it’s not all in your head.
If you’re sleeping hotter than normal -- sweating, uncomfortable, and tossing and turning, it’s because heat averages are up all over the country.
It’s as simple, and as frustrating, as that.
The deadly heat waves are also a public health crisis. According to the New York Times, the record-shattering temperatures have killed dozens in parts of Canada, Oregon, and Washington (the thermometer hit 116°F in Portland and 108°F in Seattle).
Sadly, July temperatures are expected to remain dangerously hot. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, expect a much warmer than average July for the western and northern parts of the United States.
In the above map, you can see three temperature outcomes—much warmer than average (red), average, or much cooler than average (blue)—are most likely for the month of July. Darker colors mean greater chances, not hotter or colder temperatures. White does not mean "average." It means a warm, cool, or near average July is all equally likely.
Now get this!
Summer 2021 is even hotter than last year’s record-breaking temperatures. According to NOAA, the Northern Hemisphere had its warmest summer on record in 2020, surpassing both 2019 and 2016, which were previously tied for hottest. The months of June, July, and August were 2.11°F (1.17°C) above the 20th-century average.
Vacation Sleep Strategies
Just say no to night sweats and insomnia. How do you typically sleep when you’re on vacation? Have you ever woken up sweating, tossing, and turning, or just felt extra-hot when sleeping in a new and strange environment?
If you have a summer vacation planned, all of this scorching weather (and memories of interrupted sleep on a past trip) might make you never want to leave the comfort of your own home! But there are many strategies you can try to sleep comfortably.
“Vacation sleep” is something few people think about when they’re planning their itinerary and vacation schedule. But poor sleep quality on the road can leave you grumpy, tired, and wondering why you ever went away at all.
After all of the planning, driving, and money spent, the last thing you want to do is not feel rested. It’s a vacation, right? It should feel, in every sense of the word, like a real respite from your daily stresses and pressures.
Beat the New Sleeping Environment Blues
When you’re traveling, try your best to recreate your home environment. Just because your scenery is different, it doesn’t mean that your routine has to be.
Here are just a few suggestions you can try to combat the “new sleeping environment blues” when away from home:
- Pack cozy pajamas that will help you feel like you’re at home, along with a favorite t-shirt, cozy bathrobe, or slippers.
- Continue with your normal routine: if you typically feel best getting to bed around 10 pm, try your best to stick to that.
- Pack the right accessories.
Sleep Cooler & More Comfortable
Curious which travel accessories I recommend for cooler, quieter, and more comfortable deep sleep? Here are the five items that I never leave home without:
This is crucial for blocking out surrounding noise. In a big-city hotel, that could mean police sirens at 3 am. In a rustic cabin, that could mean a rooster. I don’t like to take ANY chances in a strange place, so I always pop in earplugs on vacation to keep me in a comfortable deep sleep.
Like noise, a new environment on vacation might not have the same curtains you’re used to at home. In order to block out surrounding light, I suggest a sleeping mask while you sleep.
Does anyone else feel like bringing your pillow along on vacation helps to recreate your sleeping space? I certainly do! If you’re traveling, your sleeping space will most likely be limited to a hotel bed, someone’s sofa, or a bed that you’re just not used to. The familiarity of bringing your favorite pillow from home could provide more comfort than you realize. If you can’t pack your pillow, or can’t take up space, pack your favorite pillowcase. Although the pillow might feel slightly different, having your pillowcase could be extremely helpful.
The Best Bed Cooling Systems
Cube or OOLER. If you’re already a fan of Chili sleep products and are used to having control over your bed temperature, consider packing your cooling mattress topper on the road! Each Cool Mesh pad and unit are easily transferable. This will quickly allow you to control your sleep temperature to get a better night’s rest.
When I travel, I also take along my cooling weighted blanket. Not only does this allow me to take control of my bed microclimate in a new environment, it’s also great to use on cool mornings at the cabin! Before everyone else wakes up, I enjoy snuggling under the weighted blanket on the porch, drinking my morning coffee, and listening to birds chirp!
There are so many great benefits of getting a good night’s rest, so it’s important to not only sleep but sleep well on vacation.
While I never leave home without the five items listed above, here’s another benefit to using ChiliSleep sleep products any time of year: my family doesn’t have to adjust the thermostat to “meat locker” temperature throughout our entire home!
You can imagine that this can end up saving you a lot of money on your energy bill.
